Cool Arts Newsletter

February 2020

Welcome Cool Arts’ Executive Director

Rachael Jones, a recent transplant from Winnipeg (2017) to the Okanagan, is the business owner of Tigerlily Clothing, a women’s clothing boutique in downtown Kelowna.

Before becoming an entrepreneur Rachael spent over a decade working as a marketing and events expert. She has spent over six years working in Community Relations at Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, refining her skills in marketing, sponsorships, charitable programs and public relations. It was during her time working in Community Relations that lead to a passion of helping charitable and not for profit organizations with their events and fund-raising initiatives.

An avid learner Rachael has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Winnipeg.  Rachael is happily married to her husband Glen and has three children: Austin, Cody and Joshua. When not spending time with her family Rachael enjoys curling up with a good book and happily discarding her potato chips for her new found love of organic spelt sticks and of course a glass of Okanagan red wine.

Current Exhibitions

Celebrate Diverse Abilities

Celebrate Diverse Abilities is a series of works created over a succession of weekend workshops. Exhibited in the RCA's display windows (in their atrium space) are art smocks decorated in reclaimed language, scarves illustrated with images of artists’ physical limitations in a new light, and banners and flags jubilantly exclaiming pride for being ourselves!  Differences are what make each of us who we are and give us the unique creative perspectives that allow us to be the artists we are. The goal of this series is to fight this stigma and celebrate what each of us has to be proud of offering our wider world!

Thank you

from outgoing Administrative Coordinator
Elana Bizovie

I'd like to share that after two and half years as the administrator at Cool Arts Society, I will be moving on to other opportunities at the end of the month. This will be a very bittersweet goodbye, as my time in the studio has been full of incredible moments of joy, learning, and growth. While I will no longer be staff, I remain committed to supporting Cool Arts as a community member.

Thank you to the board, staff, volunteers, support workers, and families that I have had the pleasure of getting to know during my time here. Mostly, thank you to all of the Cool Arts artists for sharing your beautifully unique work with confidence, kindness, and a sense of real community - you inspire me.

Cool Arts Staff

Do you know the Cool Arts staff?

Shimshon Obadia – Exhibitions & Programming Coordinator

Shimshon Obadia is an interdisciplinary artist and community activist living and working on the traditional unneeded territory of the syilx Okanagan people. Recently he received an Award of Excellence from Ottawa’s Cinema WorldFest awards for his documentary and long-term community art project, Daylighting the Classroom. He has toured workshops and presented across Canada and abroad. Currently he leads the Cool Arts Society’s exhibitions and programming for adults with developmental disabilities. Having Autism Spectrum Disorder himself, he is intimately aware of the many hurdles and barriers that the artists he works with face, both daily, and in the professional art world. As part of his community art practice, it is his goal to share his experiences as a self-advocate, to help his fellow neurodivergent artists overcome together the barriers of a seemingly incompatible world. To find out more about Shimshon Obadia and his works, visit www.ShimshonObadia.com at your convenience.

Amy Bradshaw – Art Educator

Amy Bradshaw has dedicated herself to her art practice since graduating from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2003. Six years ago, Amy and four other artists founded the group Art Felt Collaborative, whose goal has been to exhibit fibre-based art work, and through their work, engage with the larger community: in the Okanagan, throughout Canada, and beyond. Amy’s work with Cool Arts Society has been able to provide a space to share her knowledge and mutually learn from the artists that she works with. Her art classes have created an experience wherein participants explore, learn, and grow through meaningful connections in a studio that feels both warm and supportive.

Elana Bizovie – Administrative Coordinator

Elana Bizovie is a graduate of the University of Alberta, holding a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Drama and Anthropology. She also holds a Fine Arts & Communications diploma from MacEwan University, focused on Arts & Cultural Management. She is currently the Administrative Coordinator of Cool Arts and works in both film (as an actor) and theatre (as an actor, director, and producer). Additionally, Elana is the co-founder and co-creative director of The Virago Collective, a theatre collective focused on interdisciplinary work with the intention of creating opportunities for artists to connect to themselves, each other, and their community in meaningful ways. Her work with Cool Arts Society supports her passion for breaking down barriers to thoughtful art engagement by making art more visible, accessible, and inclusive.

Happy Holidays!

On behalf of the Cool Arts board and staff, we wish you and yours a safe and happy holiday season. See you in the new year!
